The Role of the Microbiome in IBS and IBD

I am in love with the microbiome! I truly believe that the gut is the source of a variety of health issues, so I was thrilled to get the chance to write an article on one of my favorite topics for the Eat for Years blog run by Colleen Webb, MS, RDN, CLT. My article examines the current research into the role the microbiome may play in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Probiotics and Inflammation

Recent research found that probiotics may lower levels of an inflammatory marker (C-reactive protein) in the body. This may be part of the reason why probiotic supplements have been shown to reduce IBD symptoms. We can look forward to future studies covering this topic in more detail!

Criteria for Classifying Low and High FODMAP Foods

Have you ever wondered how Monash University and other FODMAP testing facilities determine whether a food is high, moderate, or low in FODMAPs? There are actually certain “cutoff values” for each type of FODMAP. I am eternally grateful to all who are involved in the process of figuring this out!
