Gut Microbiota Tests Are Not Ready For Primetime…Yet
A recent New York Times article reiterates the fact that the just because we have the ability to sequence our gut microbiota, doesn’t mean we know what to do with the results. Healthcare providers will one day be able to order a stool test and recommend a tailored probiotic protocol, but we just aren’t there yet. Note that microbiota sequencing is not the same as stool testing for potential pathogens and other factors.
The Mysterious Role of Short-Chain Fatty Acids in IBS
A study published in the journal Digestion put participants with IBS on the low FODMAP diet and found that it lead to symptom improvement (nothing new here). The study also showed that the low FODMAP diet reduced short-chain fatty acid levels. This could be a concern because short-chain fatty acids have been associated with gut health. However, there was no correlation between short-chain fatty acid levels and IBS symptoms. This study should lead us to question the role short-chain fatty acids play in those with IBS.
