Happy IBS Awareness Month!

There are a variety of ways to get involved and help spread the word about IBS this month. Kate Scarlata, RDN has been promoting her initiative called #IBelieveinYourStory where those with IBS are encouraged to use the hashtag to share their personal stories on social media. The campaign not only increases IBS and SIBO awareness, it also helps raise money for research. Click here to learn more about the donation opportunities.

Breath Testing Research Updates

Researchers at Monash University recently published a study which concluded that fructose and lactulose breath tests are not reproducible and their routine use is not supported. However, a consensus article that was recently published in the Journal of the American College of Gastroenterology concluded that “breath testing is a useful, inexpensive, simple and safe diagnostic test in the evaluation of common gastroenterology problems.” The consensus included input on testing standardizations from prominent researchers and clinicians who are actively working in the field. These standards will help guide further research and clinical practice in the area of IBS, carbohydrate malabsorption, and SIBO.
