Gut Health Digest: January 2017
Microbiome Makeover
The The New York Times article, A Gut Makeover for the New Year, gives us further confirmation that we are in the middle of a gut health revolution. While microbiome research is still very new, scientists agree that diet can have an impact on the number and types of microbes living in our intestines. Getting enough fiber is great, but I caution anyone who reads the article to review the Dietary Guidelines for fiber intake instead of following the 40-50 grams of fiber per day recommended in the article. Also, if you have GI issues and are trying to eat more fiber, it’s best to slowly increase the amount of fiber you eat each week in order to prevent any negative side effects such as gas or bloating.

SCD for Pediatric IBD
The specific carbohydrate diet (SCD) removes carbohydrate sources that may be difficult to digest (such as grains and starches) and has been used as a therapeutic diet for those with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD – includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). A recent study looked at the effects of SCD on children with IBD and found that 8 out of 10 children went into remission after 12 weeks on the diet! This is an exciting step towards getting more doctors to consider changes in diet as a first-line therapy for gastrointestinal disorders.

FODMAPs Make Their TV Debut
Most people have no idea what I am talking about when I tell them about the low FODMAP diet. So imagine my surprise when I see the words “low in FODMAPs” pop up on the screen during a commercial for a new nutritional drink. I will not say whether or not I endorse the product, but I am excited that the low FODMAP diet is being mentioned on television.
